The following are excerpts from real letters from residents' families regarding the care their parents received at various Maria Mallaband care homes. Names have been withheld for data protection.

"To all the staff at Alexandra Court Care Home. I just wanted to say a huge thank you for all the care and kindness you have shown my Grandma. I have been overseas since she moved out of her previous home of 50 years, and it was so wonderful to come back from Australia and find her so happy and well. She said that "nothing is ever any trouble for the girls", which is just lovely to hear, as I know she feels well looked after and comfortable in her new home. Now I feel confident that each time I come back to England, I’ll find my wonderful Grandma in good health and in good hands. Thank you!"

"This is just a short note to thank you and your staff for the wonderful care you gave mum whilst at Alexandra Court. I cant think of a better place she could have spent her final years. Care and residential homes get such a bad press these days but you run an establishment which others should look up to.

I know mum was very happy and comfortable and this was due to the genuinely caring attitude of your staff. Many thanks once again."

"On behalf of our families we would like to say a big thank you to you all for caring for Kit so well over the past five years. Ashfield Court is a lovely place. Once she adjusted to the big change in her life, Kit was always happy there, particularly after she moved into the first floor room overlooking the Stray, where she would watch the world go by and see the changing colours on the trees. We are sure you will all miss Kit as much as we do, but she was fortunate enough to spend her last few years in a caring, happy environment. We can’t thank you enough."

"I am writing to thank you and all of your staff for the wonderful care you’ve given to Jean & Irvine and all the family over the last five and a half years.

Amongst the outstanding quality of care she received, Jean always praised the food at Bowerfield Court. She was a good cook herself and enjoyed her food, so that is praise worth having. I remember one time when she’d just come back from hospital after one of her ‘dos’, and she was still feeling a bit poorly. You brought her team in her room and it was such a lovely little plate of tiny sandwiches and cakes, cut to a small and manageable size, so as not to over-face her. I think the contribution of the catering staff in placed like Bowerfield Court can often be overlooked, despite the enormous difference they make to people’s quality of life, so please thank them too.

Most of all, I can’t thank you all enough for the care everyone gave us in the last days of Jean’s life. It is never an easy time for a family, but I don’t think it was easy for you and your staff either; I knew Jean was well cared for in Bowerfield Court, but until last week I didn’t realise she was so well loved. Seeing members of staff in tears was oddly comforting, in a way, as it emphasised that you and your staff don’t just offer care because it’s your job, it’s also personal. If I ever need to move into a nursing home myself, I would be very happy to live at Bowerfield Court."

“I would just like to write and let you know my feelings and observations on the care my Mother has received in the last 3 years. Initially she was being looked after in Cavendish Court and subsequently for 2 years, in The Belvedere. Both homes have been brilliant.

I had previously cared for my Mum in our family home and it was a very difficult decision to take, to let someone else take care of her, but I know that I could not have chosen better. The care and dedication given has been marvellous. Kim and her team in Cavendish Court were very welcoming to Mum and the family. When, after a year, it became necessary for her to move, I was worried that the care would not be so good. I was wrong!

Pat took over the reins at The Belvedere shortly after Mum moved in and proved to be a fantastic Manager. I think she has been a great motivator of her team and over the last couple of years seems to have built a team of people who really care for the residents, treating them with respect and dignity - in sometimes very difficult circumstances. There are too many people to name and thank individually, but one who deserves a special mention is Tom, he has been a huge support.

Talking to other residents’ relatives, I know that I am not the only one to be very impressed by the way the home is run. A number have experiences of other nursing homes which confirm how special The Belvedere is.

Sadly Mum passed away last month. Her final farewell from The Belvedere was handled with the kindness, compassion and professionalism that I had come to expect.

I have already thanked Pat, but I think it is also important that you have feedback. These people are the ones making your business successful.”

"I’m putting pen to paper as I went to Wilmslow Leisure Centre last week, where I met a delightful lady, who I believe was 90 years old. She was having a wonderful time swimming and I had a chat to the lady who was accompanying her. Her name was Sue. Sue said that she was an Activity Co-ordinator at Cavendish Court. I was amazed as Sue was so caring of her. If I had not spoken to her, I would have said they were related. You are very lucky and so are the residents to have such a wonderful woman as Sue on your team. If ever I was to go into a care home, I would rather be in a home where as well as the care I needed was provided, but also with activities such as Sue gives. Congratulations to Sue and to you for having such a warm, kind hearted, caring woman on your team."

"We felt we had to write and express our thanks for such a wonderful ‘Come Dine With Me’ evening last night. The experience of sitting down to a family meal is always a treat for us and as usual the food was delicious. What we really found delightful was the reaction of Mabel to the entertainment before dinner. The lady (Emma) soon got everyone involved, singing along to songs from the early part of the 20th Century, but it was when she started singing songs from the 60s and 70’s that Mabel truly got involved. Waving her arms and tapping her foot along to a number by the Bay City Rollers had us watching in amazement! We’re not certain if a memory was rekindled or if it was the beat of the music, but it is a long time since we have seen her so animated, she was really enjoying herself. A big ‘thank you’ to everyone involved in the evening, we enjoyed it tremendously and not just because of the reaction of our Mum, we can also say that by looking at the faces of other residents and their families, it was enjoyed by all."

"I am writing to thank you on behalf of Mum, myself and my Aunt for the wonderful 'come dine with me' evening. We all enjoyed it enormously from Emma the singer, to the very tasty BBQ. Everyone made us feel welcome. Karen, Adrian and the staff deserve 'thanks' for making it a huge success."

"I wish to thank the management and staff at Corinthian House for their help and care. Last Friday we were entertained by Emma, who had everyone singing – even one resident aged 99 years was joining in. In the evening Adrian (the chef) provided a BBQ for 19 people. The staff went out of their way to help our relative and us, to a first class evening. I myself appreciate all that goes on at this friendly, caring place. The staff always have a friendly smile and they must have times of stress which we are not aware of. Thank you all. It is so helpful to know you are all there working for the good of all the residents. It’s is a pleasure to come to the home and be made so welcome."

"I am writing to say how much Mum and myself enjoy and look forward to the ‘Come Dine With Me’ evenings. It is so nice for us all to be able to spend an evening together and staff put a lot of effort into creating a happy, friendly social atmosphere. Mum especially enjoys and appreciates being able to spend time with her family. It gives her something to talk about and is stress free for us as we have no worries about getting her there and back. My Mum has been on several outings which she loves, especially the trip to Bridlington – a place she thought she would never see again. She may not always show it, but she also enjoys the various activities that take place during the week at the home. I can see the difference in her when she has been on an outing or joined in with an activity. It enables her to do or see things which she and us as a family thought she would ever do again. It lifts her self esteem. Thank you on behalf of Mum, myself and family for all the effort you put into making her life in Corinthian house a happy one. Mum does like time on her own watching TV and being with her family, but enjoys socialising with fellow residents and staff, and usually has a story to make us laugh. We can still see the Mum we know and love."

"I am writing to express my gratitude at the care given to my Dad during his stay with you. The staff on Knebworth Court were always so caring and attentive and there was never a day when we visited that we weren’t greeted by a smile and welcome by any staff member we met from reception onwards. We now have a valued member of our family missing from our lives, but it was very reassuring to know that Dad was in such a happy and friendly environment, and the care he received at Monread Lodge was excellent, especially during the last few weeks of his time with you."

"We would like thank you all very much for the loving care which you gave Frankie during her seven months with you. She settled in very well and appeared to be quite content in her new life. Frankie always enjoyed drama and the entertainment which the activities team provided.

As it says on the packet you gave care, comfort and consideration."

"Thank you all so much for your kindness and care of Evelyn over the last six months. She was a lovely lady and sadly you did not know her at her best, but it was a great comfort to us to feel that she was being well looked after and kindly treated. Thank you to Margaret and Les for being at her funeral to represent you all. There were more of her old neighbours and friends there then we had expected, as sadly she had outlived a lot of her very old friends. You all do a really marvellous job in the care of the old people you look after."

"Just a few lines to say a big thank you to everybody for all the care and attention you gave Geoffrey at Oaklands whilst it was his home for his last remaining years. Mum and I were always made to feel welcome by all members of staff when we visited. The home always had a warm and friendly atmosphere. Dad always greeted us with a lovely smiley face - what more can I say again, but thank you."

"Thank you for your note. It was lovely to hear from you again. You have all been very kind and understanding and I can't thank you enough for the excellent care you gave Mummy."

"I take this opportunity to thank Rosedale for the devoted care you gave to my wife for two and a half years. I am full of praise for the excellent care you gave her."

"I would like to thank you for your promise when you came to see my wife to try and convince her that moving to a care home was in her best interest, and that you would see that she had a good room with a view and be well looked after. This you did on all counts.

It was a difficult time for me to let her go at the time, but as it turned out it was the best decision I could have made, as your staff are second to none. I cannot find words to describe how caring and the attention to her needs have been carried out to make Margaret's life as comfortable as possible. It will be my pleasure to recommend Rosedale to anyone I come across who find themselves with the same decision I had to make. So a big big thank you to you and all your wonderful staff at Rosedale."

"It’s hard to put into words how much your love and care meant to us all in the time Mum spent at Skell Lodge. We couldn’t have found her a better place to stay. Thank you so very much."

"On behalf of residents, family and friends I would like to say a big thank you to you all for the wonderful picnic we were able to share outdoors yesterday. The service and all the food was simply first class. I'm sure you would all be extremely tired after such a busy day, but to us on the receiving end, it was a very memorable occasion."

Michael & Syd visited Appletree Care Home in Meadowfield on 20th October 2010. They had this to say "The Manager leads and encourages a good team, clearly focused on the prime aims of the home. There is ample evidence of an excellent level of good physical care in this well knit community. Staff are providing social and mental stimuli and take pride in the impact of their efforts on the residents wellbeing." The home's manager, Christine Martin said "I would encourage any home to participate in the Enter & View process."

"Thank you so much for accommodating me and my Mother on the visit recently to Appletree. My apologies for not being in touch sooner and thank you for calling us this week. What I do know is how very much appreciated was your time, care, effort and warmth at (and since) meeting you and your care staff. It meant a great deal to experience such great care and in Meadowfield, it was really nice to meet you all."

"We thank you for the excellent care and attention that Mother received from all the staff at Skell Lodge. Your level of care and support enabled Mother to make a peaceful pain-free transition between this life and the next... Thank you for all your care, attention and support."

"To the management and all staff. We felt priviledged to be part of your "Dignity in Care" Day.

Thank you for the opportunity to see the special care, consideration and the effort you make, to enrich the lives of all your residents. With our best wishes, Madelein & Ronnie, Freda & Graham and Maureen & Eddy - The Tea Dance Team."

"Just a few words to everyone connected to Maria Mallaband and Batley Hall Nursing Home for the care of our Mother received over the last three and a half years. The dedication shown at Batley Hall was outstanding and we will never forget what all the staff did for our Mother in her twilight years."

"Ashfield Court and all the staff were wonderful and I know Dad was very happy there. Sadly he was not in the best of health but they looked after him very well. I would recommend Ashfield Court to anyone, and I am very grateful for all their help and support."

"Everyone in Troutbeck was so helpful and friendly and couldnt do enough to make Mums time there comfortable for her and for us as a family. Special thanks to the Manager and her team of staff for looking after Mum most of the time and the night staff who cared for Mum through the night. No matter how many times I say thank you to all of you, I will never be able to express how much your help, support and kindness meant to me and for that I am truly grateful."

"I'm sorry it has taken me a little while to get around to writing this, but I am writing on behalf of my sister and myself to express our sincere gratitude to you and ALL the staff at Ashfield Court for the care, companionship and support you gave to our Dad, during the past two years. It is difficult to put down in a letter exactly how much it has meant to us to know that Dad was safe and secure and cared for in an environment that was as much like home as it is possible to be. I have been tremendously impressed with how the staff have responded to his changing needs in a totally professional and sympathetic way. Thank you very, very much for everything. I am really glad we chose Ashfield Court for Dad to move into. Its a big responsibility having to make that decision for a parent, but I really feel that we got it right. You should all be extremely proud of what you do."

"My close relative is a resident in Alexandra Court. I am writing to tell you about the staff. They are all so dedicated and nothing is too much trouble. A few days ago my relative was being difficult. I spoke to the Manager and she came to the apartment. She was superb. It was a masterclass in how to handle a situation. She was very calm but she got the message across. Alexandra Court is a beautiful place and staff to compliment it. I cant mention everybody, just to say from the Handyperson to the Manager, they are all wonderful."

"Whist writing I would like to give my sincere thanks to the Manager and the rest of the staff at Furze Hill Lodge for giving excellent care and attention to my Aunt. It was a big step for my Aunt to relocate from Devon to Surrey and you have all helped her to adjust to this major change in her circumstance. My Aunt and I hope to stay in touch with you all and visit or stay with you again in the future."

"May I once more bring to your attention how wonderful Diane and her team are at Carmel Lodge. Yesterday I thoroughly enjoyed a harvest supper with my lovely Mum. While I was enjoying myself, I noticed a young carer patiently taking all the time needed to gently feed two residents. Obviously Carmel Lodge take nutrition for the elderly as an important factor in caring. I wish I could mention all the team by name, but as I dont know them all by name, may I say God Bless Diane and all the carers."

"I wish to convey my praise regarding Batley Hall Nursing & Residential Home. I write from the perspective of a resident's relative, having visited at least three times a week for the past eight years. First, thank you for nursing my Mother; she is alive today thanks to the care given from the wonderful staff. Thank you for providing a warm and comfortable home for the residents. Thank you for the caring and conscientious staff that you employ. Thank you for the choice and variety of food and dietary requirements on offer, and for the talents of the chefs. Thank you for the manner and respect that the residents and visitors are addressed. Thank you for the entertainment on offer."

"My mother came to Troutbeck in April 2010. Previously she had spent five years in an apartment followed by one year in a residential home but by Easter 2010 had stopped walking and needed more care. We were concerned that she was suffering from some amount of dementia and that the move to Troutbeck may have unsettled her more. Within three days of moving however, mother was settling in, and I could see that Troutbeck was an ideal place for her to be. We are so impressed in all ways by the standards of care - the welcoming reception, the nurses (who within a short time oversaw the healing of a bedsore, which my mother had sustained through inactivity before entering Troutbeck); all the lovely carers of every nationality, the care of the churches in Ilkley, and not least the opportunity for me to play the lovely grand piano when we visit to add a little extra entertainment to the excellent range already available. This is such a an excellent and happy nursing home. Thank you."

"All too often we hear of people's complaints of neglect, poor food, dirty conditions and even cruelty from staff members towards residents in some nursing homes. This letter is just the opposite; it's a heart-felt thank-you to such a lovely nursing home. Our Mum loved every minute in Corinthian House. She loved being waited on and being pampered, having her hair done and not having to do any cooking or cleaning. All she had to do was sit back and relax, and she did, bless her. We are going to miss going to Corinthian House because we shared a lot of laughs and happiness with the staff, and have come away with some lovely memories. In fact, we started to think it was our second home, too. Many, many thanks to all the wonderful staff for making Mum and Dad's last few years so comfortable and happy."

"Just a line to thank all those involved in the care of my Father over the last days of his life in Troutbeck. The attention and consideration he received in your hands ensured that his last few days were as comfortable as possible with people who supported and respected him. Knowing that he was being so well looked after gave the family, especially myself, confidence and peace of mind at a difficult time. We were also very well cared for at each of our visits - thank you."

"I should be grateful if you could convey our sincere gratitude to all your dedicated staff at Ashfield Court for the care X received throughout her time as a resident. It is perhaps inevitable that the media concentrate on the failings of some care homes whilst the professionalism, outstanding care and compassion provided by homes such as Ashfield Court go unreported. Our experience has been entirely positive and, as a family, we could not have hoped for a better and more caring environment. Throughout her five years at Ashfield Court we have had total confidence that her needs would be met and that her well being was always the priority. In this respect we are also most grateful that her wishes were respected and that, when the time came, she passed away peacefully and with dignity in her room at Ashfield Court. I would like to thank you for your valuable guidance on my responsibilities following her death."

"Just to say 'thank you' to all the management at Corinthian House for a most memorable evening provided for my husband and I on Valentines Day. It was such a surprise and all the more enjoyable for that. I have already left a card for the chef and the staff, but I must thank you for all the time which went into our special evening. One to remember forever. I will not mention anyone by name but you are all included for your kindness and help to my husband and I, which we do appreciate."

"I would like to place on record my sincere thanks for the very high standard of care my father received while staying at Troutbeck Nursing Home. I was very impressed with the attitude of the staff. He entered the home when it became apparent to him that he could no longer cope on his own, but his view of care homes at this state was very negative. This changed into a much more positive one within a very short time of arriving at Troutbeck."

"I was greatly relieved when I called your nursing home to enquire about my Aunt, and was put in touch with the Care Manager. We talked about my Aunt and it was such a relief to have her act so professionally, but have the ability to put me at ease by saying the right words to me in a calming and reassuring voice. I am grateful to her. She is really an asset to your nursing home."

"My mother has been a resident at Chesham House Care home, Alderley Edge for over two years and transferred to your new building, Cavendish Court, last Saturday. I went to the home during the afternoon to assist with the move and I am writing to draw your attention to the success of the operation.

During the last year, my Mother has been kept informed about the move to the new building by the staff. Although she was a little uncertain about the matter initially, by last Saturday she was looking forward to it. Throughout the day she was treated with care and consideration, and help was on hand to move her heavier items and resolve any problems she had. She was very pleased with her new room and, by the time I left, she was settling into new surroundings.

I would like to commend the staff, in particular the Care Manager, who remained calm and efficient at all times, for their hard work and assistance. They made what was inevitably a difficult day as easy as possible for the residents."

"Thank you very much for the most enjoyable Cheese and Wine evening last Friday. We enjoyed the entertainment, particularly the young musician and the school choir - all budding musicians in the making. A pat on the back for the chef and his crew for the wonderful spread.

Our thanks to you for all your preparation and hard work. It was very much appreciated."

"A note to thank you and your staff for inviting me to the Cheese and Wine evening last Friday, which was enjoyable on many fronts.

The children were delightful and played and sang beautifully. Opportunities for the elderly to have contact with the young are very special.

James (Toseland) was inspirational, and not just for his singing and piano playing skills which were exceptional. As your Chairman eloquently pointed out, James echoes the values and virtues which Maria Mallaband hold dear.

Thank you all so much for what you do for Dad, to make his stay with you as comfortable and happy as possible."

"I write to thank you and all your staff for the care and professionalism that was shown to my Mother whilst in your home for the past year. I am sure that she could not have had a more happy and comfortable time in the remaining year of her life in any other nursing home. As a member of the Airedale Acute Trust Patient & Carer Panel, I am aware that the Trust has a number of rooms reserved at Troutbeck. As such I thought it would be appropriate for me to make the Trust aware of the high regard my family place on your establishment. Hence I have copied this letter to the Chief Executive of the Trust."

"To all staff who cared for Maureen during her stay with you.

It was a great relief to find a Home who actually cared and nurtured the Residents in your care and for our family especially to carry on the regime of working etc. that we do with her at home.

We have noticed a change in her, she is more responsive than before. She particularly enjoyed mixing with new friends and sends her love to Cecily, Betty and Ivy.

We hope to see you all on the 25th February for Dignity Day."

"I am naturally saddened by the loss of my late stepfather on 20th March 2011. I knew that the last few months of his life would never be easy ones, but I am truly grateful for all the care and attention you lavished on him during his time at Ashfield Court since Friday 5th November 2010. I know he was paying most of the cost of his care, but there are some things which money can't buy and feel that you provided far more than the basic level of care that he was entitled to. I don't think we could have asked for anything more! So many thanks to all the staff for all that you did for X and continued thanks for all that you still do for my Mother."

"We just want to thank you for the lovely celebration you provided for Helena’s 100th Birthday. Unfortunately the ‘birthday girl’ was not fully aware of what was happening, but everyone else thoroughly enjoyed it – how could we not? The set up in the conservatory and garden was lovely, the food was enjoyed by all of us (most came back for seconds) and the pianist was perfect. We realise that this was a team effort and that all the staff contributed to making the party such a success. Thank you all very much."

"I am the sister of Eveline Hesse who spent her last few weeks with you at Troutbeck Nursing Home. As the Autumn progressed Eveline was moving towards her final days. What a lovely gentle atmosphere you offered us as a family. The final days of someone very dear is a family time, and we were cheerfully welcomed at all times.

You allowed the family to create a home environment and decorate her room with pictures and photos. This allowed her to feel more 'at home' and ease the distress of her daughters.

Everyone from meet and greet staff to those cheerful meal servers who do a marathon every day had time for us, and were uplifting and respectful in the best possible way. I say a special' thank you' to the physical carers. Eveline did not take well to the need for physical caring, to her bodily functions being cared for. It is such a loss of personal dignity. The staff were wonderful inspite of this and I appreciated that so much. We were able to be with her in your beautiful environment and although she was unable to make full use of your facilities, for us being able to walk out of the back gate onto the moor was a relief in the long journey towards her death. The rabbit was a great consolation and such a clever idea!

We were warned as the end was near and I was able to hold my sisters hand as she drew her last breath. The nursing care at this time was very helpful and gentle.

What more can we ask as we leave this earth than to depart in peace and love, and this is what you offered us."

I would like to thank everyone at Troutbeck who had any dealings with caring for my cousin these last few months. She certainly needed a lot of care and she always looked so comfy tucked up in her bed under very pretty duvets. Many thanks to all of you.

"All the staff at Troutbeck. Thank you so much for your excellent and kind care of Eric in the last few weeks. He was always comfortable and contented at Troutbeck, and it was reassuring for us, his family, to know that he was receiving such wonderful attention and care from you all. Thank you too for always making us as visitors so welcome and for taking the time to talk to us both personally and on the telephone. It was all very much appreciated."

"As a family we can not praise high enough the care Linda and her staff gave at Willow Bank. If all nursing homes were managed with the same care and dedication to residents welfare, no elderly person would ever again worry about going into care, or a family be anxious because they could no longer cope to care for their much loved relative.

My mother was always treated with the upmost care, compassion and love. The nursing care she received was excellent. The carers do what i appreciate is not an easy job so cheerfully, efficiently and patiently while at all times keeping my late mums dignity intact. We as a family were always made to feel welcome by everyone. Linda and every single member of her staff are the ensuring heros of this world.

We thank them all from the bottom of our hearts."

"I would like to express my gratitude to the staff including Senior Management at Willowdene Care Home. My Father was in your care home for 5 weeks until he passed on recently, and I would personally like to tell you how happy I was with the service he received during his stay."
